Delivery

Product is only half the story here at George Davies; delivery and after-service are just as important. We want every single customer to feel looked after right from your very first contact with us.

Each delivery is made on rigid trucks mounted with forklifts, allowing us to place your products exactly (within reason) where they suit you. Long, narrow tracks and placing bags around the back of your home along with gravel driveways are not a problem. We just ask for a 9ft-by-9ft access to enable the forklifts to get through with ease.

Here at George Davies Turf, we want to make life as easy as we can for you; our website boasts a three-day lead time; however, if you need it sooner, please give us a call, as we normally work on a two-day turnaround.

Our skilled drivers are highly trained and cool under pressure. If you have any limitations at all, please tell us ahead of time at the point of order or add notes to your online order. Trust us when we say our drivers truly make difficult deliveries easy.

When is the best time to lay new turf? 

If your soil is not frozen solid or heavily waterlogged, you can lay turf any time of year. The important part when laying new grass is ensuring the soil beneath has been prepared correctly to give the grass roots their best chance to quickly anchor in.   

How do I measure my lawn? 

When it’s time to update or lay your new turf, where do you start? How many rolls do you need? Our How To Measure Guide provides you with all the information you need to accurately measure every type of lawn. 

What equipment do I need to lay turf? 

Before you lay your first roll of turf, make sure you have the right turfing equipment for a smooth process. The tools you’ll need include: 

• Garden fork or rotavator 

• Garden rake 

• Laying boards 

• Garden knife 

• Garden spade 

• Hose or sprinkler  

• Sensible clothing including flat–soled shoes 

How big is a roll of turf? 

Each roll is 1.65cm long x 61cm wide which is approximately 1m2. This is a natural product and it can vary slightly due to natural tolerances such as moisture and shrinkage. We suggest always buying 5%-10% more for your project as you are unlikely to be able to use 100% of each roll due to cuts and wastage. How much turf do I need to order? 

Gardens come in various shapes and sizes and your approach will differ based on this. Once you’ve prepared your garden for turfing, it’s time to measure to find out how many grass rolls you need, luckily our turf calculator helps you work out exactly how much you need. 

How much does turf cost? 

When it comes to the different types of turf, the price often reflects the quality of the product, as well as what it’s made from and how it’s been cared for. Here at George Davies, we have five different types of natural turf and six variants of artificial turf to meet your budget.

How soon can I use my new lawn? 

As long as the soil has been properly prepared, your fresh new lawn will take about 2 weeks to grow shallow roots and up to 6 weeks to be fully settled. How fast it roots depends on many factors including the type of turf, soil conditions, the weather etc. The more time you can allow your grass to bed in, the better.

How do I get rid of ant hills in my lawn? 

The most effective way to remove an ant hill is to physically remove it from the ground using a shovel or your own hands (please use gloves!). Spread the soil evenly to avoid damaging your lawn, then dig deep into the nest and apply ant killer powder granules. One of the most effective ways to keep birds away from your grass seed is to put in place some form of fencing or mesh. How soon can I use my new lawn? 

When you see that final roll of turf laid out, all you want to do is run around and celebrate on it! But with fresh new turf, this is the last thing you should be doing. Our fresh new lawn will take about 2 weeks to grow shallow roots and up to 6 weeks to be fully settled. Can you lay turf over turf? 

It is possible to lay new turf on top of old grass; however, you’re not going to achieve the best possible result. Therefore, we highly recommend you never lay fresh turf on top of old; otherwise, your lawn’s condition will deteriorate over time as the old grass dies. Does frequent mowing thicken grass?

Can you cut wet grass?

The straight answer is yes, you absolutely can lay turf during colder months, except on frozen ground. It’s a well-known but misplaced conception that you should not be laying turf during the winter.
