When The Possibilities Are Endless, What’s The Harm In Being A Little Curious?

Celebrating National Gardening Week with creative ways to transform your garden this spring.

Is there anything that declares spring more than National Gardening Week? The UK’s biggest celebration of all things green!

Led by the Royal Horticultural Society, this year’s theme is Be Curious – giving us permission to pause and reflect on our outdoor spaces. More importantly, consider how we can best transform our gardens into our own piece of paradise.

At George Davies Turf & Stone, we’re often asked for our recommendations on domestic and commercial landscaping. So, we thought we’d take this opportunity to share some creative ways to update your garden this spring.

What Could Your Garden Look Like This Spring?

Spring is the time of year when we feel inspired and motivated, looking forward to a new lease of life in our gardens! To get the most from your garden, here are 5 ways to prepare your garden for a full and fabulous summer.

1. Start by repairing your lawn

It can be easy to get carried away with planting schemes, furniture, and what you see on Pinterest. But the real, and sometimes quicker, transformation starts with what’s right under your feet…your lawn!

A tired, patchy lawn can make even the best-designed garden feel unfinished. Whereas a vibrant, thick, healthy lawn can lift an entire space. Start by assessing your grass and consider the following:

  • Bare or bald patches = Overseed the area to encourage growth
  • Dry or waterlogged turf = Aerate compact soil to improve drainage
  • Thin or discoloured grass = Feed your lawn with a nutrient-rich fertiliser

2. If replacing turf, choose the right one

Sometimes, replacing your entire lawn and starting again is the best solution to improving your garden. Every garden is different, so it’s important to choose turf that will thrive in the right environment and serve the right purpose.

  • Trident turf is our premium, hard-wearing option for family gardens
  • Clover turf offers a robust, lower-maintenance, eco-friendly lawn
  • Wild flower turf creates colourful meadows to encourage pollinators
  • Shade-tolerant turf is ideal for outdoor spaces with limited sunlight
  • RTF turf is our hardiest turf that can withstand high use and sports

3. Incorporate stone & paving

4. Add detailing with decorative aggregate

A quick and easy way to change the look and feel of your garden is with decorative aggregate. Whether you’re covering a large area or filling in small gaps, colour stones such as Black Ice, Mixed Onyx or Tango Mix help tie your garden together. Decorative aggregates are also a cost-effective way to section off your garden, creating unique zones for different uses, such as seating areas, sensory gardens, or BBQ areas.

5. Complete a quick spring garden reset

If your lawn is doing ok, you can still be curious about your garden. After all, small tweaks can sometimes make the biggest difference!

  • Mow your lawn – Sometimes a fresh cut can help it look bright and healthy. Mowing can also encourage thick, consistent growth.
  • Trim the edges – Neatening the edges of your lawn provides a quick, manicured finish – framing your lawn and clearing a route around it.
  • Clear grass clippings – Although they can support your turf, clearing them from your lawn provides a ready-to-use surface.
  • Weed, weed, weed – Cover all bases, including your lawn, flower beds, gravel, and spaces between paving, to remove these unwanted pests!
  • Neaten hedges – Cut back any overhanging trees, hedges or bushes. This’ll help your garden look bigger and allow more sunlight to reach your plants.
  • Freshen your planting – A quick way to brighten your garden is to add colourful flowers to beds, borders, pots, or planters.
  • Repaint furniture – A fresh coat of paint on fences, sheds, or furniture can give them a new lease of life and bring some colour to your garden.

Why Spring Is The Perfect Time To Change Your Garden

National Gardening Week is in April for a reason. It sits right in the active growing season and the sweet spot of the turfing calendar. Spring is a brilliant time to revamp your garden or relay your turf because:

  • Soil temperatures are warmer and encourage root growth
  • There’s still high rainfall to keep fresh turf and plants watered
  • Longer daylight hours allow for more gardening possibilities
  • Spring offers the ideal conditions for optimum growth

By acting on your garden plans now, you’re not just refreshing your garden; you’re investing in a functional and beautiful outdoor space ready for a full-on summer!

From Curious to Creative

National Gardening Week is full of inspiration, with over 1,200 events happening across the UK. But inspiration is only the starting point. The real transformation happens when you take the next step and put plans into action.

So, if you’ve been putting off sorting your lawn or outdoor space, consider this your sign to be curious!
