What is Kandla Grey Sandstone?

We’re glad you asked! Kandla Grey is a natural sandstone paving material that is loved by landscapers, gardeners, and designers. It’s characterised by its soft grey tones with occasional warm brown streaks across the surface, giving it a unique, authentic finish. At GDT&S, we source Kandla Grey from the best suppliers in the UK to ensure our customer gets the best quality and results for their paving products.

Why Choose Kandla Grey Sandstone in Your Landscaping?

There are several reasons why, but we’ve pulled out our top (and favourite) reasons why:

For its Natural Aesthetic Appeal

One of the main attractions of Kandla Grey is its colour palette! Soft greys, warm brown streaks, and natural variance in surface patterns make it a truly elegant choice of paving. As a porous material, it absorbs water, offering a completely different yet equally stunning look to your Kandla Grey patio, whether dry or wet.

For its Bespoke Look & Feel

The great thing about sandstone is that it’s a natural stone product. This means each slab will vary slightly in colour tones, textures, and surface patterns. If you value a unique finish for your paving, then Kandla Grey is the perfect choice for you!

For its Design & Landscaping Compatibility

Are you incorporating multiple materials into your landscaping? Kandla Grey’s cool, natural colour complements a range of landscaping materials. Composite decking, bark, cladding, or natural turf, Kandla Grey can help tie all your landscaping elements together.

For its Versatility in Use & Location

Sandstone is renowned for its strength and durability, which is why it’s a popular choice. Thanks to these qualities, Kandla Grey is highly versatile. Whether you’re a homeowner, landscaper, or garden designer, you can use Kandla Grey for patios, walkways, and driveways.

Slip-resistant Qualities for Safer Use

Kanda Grey Sandstone features a textured surface, providing a natural slip-resistant property. As a porous material, it also absorbs water, preventing surface water and potential slippages. So, you can install Kandla Grey around water features and poolside with added peace of mind.

For its Durability & Return on Investment

At GDT&S, we supply Kandla Grey Sandstone with an average depth of 22mm, providing your paving slabs with a solid foundation and sturdiness for long-term investment.

Where to Use Kandla Grey

To Create a Modern Minimalist Design

Kandla Grey offers clean lines, narrow joints, and minimal accent colours which complement a contemporary garden design. We recommend pairing it with steel or dark aluminium features as well as vibrant green foliage.

For Elegant Entertaining Zones

The warm grey of Kandla Grey Sandstone creates standout areas for your landscaping. Combined with its durability and slip-resistant qualities, it’s ideal for seating zones, alfresco dining, and around water features.

For Practical Garden Walkways

If you’re looking for small pockets of paving, Kandla Grey works well for straight or curved walkways through gardens, or stepping stones around flowerbeds or across lawns. Crafted from sandstone, these paving slabs are strong enough to handle foot traffic.

How to Install Kandla Grey Sandstone Slabs

If you’ve ordered your Kandla Grey and are ready to install the perfect patio for you or a client, here’s a 9-step guide from our stone experts:

    1. Measure & Mark: Clearly mark out the patio or paving area. Remember to account for the size of your slabs and joints (we recommend 8-10mm for joints).
    2. Ground Preparation: Remove topsoil and debris and dig to a depth of 200mm.
    3. Add Your Sub-Base: Lay and compact a suitable hard-core or Type 1 aggregate sub-base to about 150mm depth.
    4. Add Your Mortar Bed: Mix sharp sand and cement to create a mortar bed, approx. 25 mm thick.
    5. Apply Stone Primer: Before placing the Kandla Grey slab, apply a primer (we recommend EasyPrime) to the underside to improve adhesion.
    6. Lay Your Slabs: Carefully lay each slab. Use a spirit level to ensure evenness and tap the slab’s surface gently with a rubber mallet to secure it in place.
    7. Drying & Curing: Allow at least 24 hours for the mortar bed to dry and cure before filling joints or allowing heavy use.
    8. Slab Jointing: Fill the joints by sweeping in Azpects EASYJoint for a stable installation and professional finish.
    9. After-care & Sealing: After installation, apply a sealer such as Azpects EasySeal to protect the slabs from staining.

Maintenance Tips to Care for Your Kandla Grey

    • Regularly clean the slabs using a mild detergent and a soft brush. Avoid using acidic cleaners, as they can damage the natural stone.
    • Re-seal the stone slabs every 2-3 years (or as needed), depending on exposure and foot traffic.
    • Don’t allow moss or algae to build up in the joints, as this can undermine slab stability. Also, clean up any spillages straight away to avoid staining.
    • Avoid pressure-washing too aggressively; natural stone can be damaged by overly high-pressure jets. Our guide on How to Jet Wash a Patio can help you here.
    • Inspect joint pointing annually and refill any cracks promptly to avoid water ingress.
