Jet washing is a fast and effective way to keep patios looking their best. But the key to success lies in knowing the material you’re working with and how to jet wash your patio correctly. Whether you’re maintaining your own porcelain patio, stone drive or cobbled pathway, or providing services for clients, taking a thoughtful approach to cleaning and preventative care will ensure your patio remains a beautiful and durable feature for years to come.
Different stones will require a different jet power to achieve an effective clean without causing damage to the stone. Soft stones, such as limestone and sandstone, will need a lighter nozzle compared to concrete, porcelain or granite, which can handle a stronger pressure.
Look for a pressure washer with adjustable settings. This will allow you to switch the strength to match the type of stone and the type of cleaning required. Also consider an adjustable nozzle to aid with the direction of cleaning.
Start by sweeping or removing fallen leaves, moss, and garden debris, and remove any weeds from joints. Move any furniture off the patio or cover structures that cannot be moved. Having a clear view of your patio will allow you to assess the stains you’re working with and ensure a thorough cleaning of the area.
Connect your pressure washer to your water supply and set it to the lowest setting. If your pressure washer has one, set it to a wide fan too. Sweep the wand across your slabs to soak the patio. This will help loosen the dirt and lift existing stains.
Top Tip: Don’t allow the jet wash to remain stationary. Sweep consistently across the patio for a thorough clean. Do this for step three, too.
Switch the pressure washer to a medium setting and spray 50cm above each slab. Move slowly and steadily across the patio at a 45-degree angle to the slab’s surface, overlapping where you’ve been to ensure a thorough clean.
Top Tip: To avoid direct pressure on the joints, move the pressure washer diagonally across the slabs.
Use a hose to rinse the area and clean any nearby walls or structures that were splashed. Step back to admire your handiwork, and if stubborn stains remain, use a spot treatment rather than jet rewashing the area.
If you’re staying on top of general patio maintenance, such as sweeping, clearing and weeding, you should only need to jet wash your patio once a year – ideally in spring, after dealing with winter conditions, and preparing your patio for summer. High-traffic patios, or those prone to moss and algae, may require seasonal jet washing to keep them looking as good as new.
Pressure washing your paving incorrectly can result in permanent damage to your beautiful patio, such as:
If there are still stains on your patio after jet washing, a spot treatment is the best solution. There are many ways you can resolve the issue, which are chemical-free, eco-friendly and easy to do.
