Natural Bark Mulch for Landscaping & Garden Projects

Our bark mulch is a by-product of our trusted timber partners and is a fantastic product to use within any shape or size of garden. Bark mulch is one of the most effective and natural ways to improve your garden’s health and appearance – it’s no wonder that it is becoming a popular material for garden designs and landscaping!

At George Davies Turf & Stone, we have purposely sourced high-quality bark mulch graded to provide consistent, long-lasting ground cover. It is a highly versatile product, making bark mulch a very versatile and flexible landscaping material.

The Multiple Benefits of Bark Mulch

  • Moisture Retention: A layer of bark helps reduce evaporation, so soil stays moist for longer, especially during dry, warmer months.
  • Weed Suppression: Bark not only squashes room for weeds to grow, but it also blocks sunlight from reaching them.
  • Weather Protection: Whether it’s hot summers or frosty winters, bark provides a blanket to protect soil and plant roots from extreme conditions.
  • Improved Soil Health: As bark naturally breaks down, it enriches the soil structure and slowly adds organic matter over time.
  • Low Maintenance: Bark mulch is a quick, effective way to dress your beds or borders without fuss, weeding, watering, or ongoing attention.
  • Decorative Finish: Create a tidy, professional look that makes your garden look bigger and enhances contrast between plants, turf and stone.

What is bark mulch?

Bark mulch is a natural by-product of timber. Made from natural tree bark, such as pine, it is screened to an average chip size of 8-35mm. This provides uniform coverage for design features such as walkways or seating areas while suppressing weeds. It also offers additional benefits for improving soil health, structure, and moisture retention.

How much bark mulch do I need?

Measure the area(s) where you’re installing bark mulch. Input these measurements into our handy bark mulch calculator to determine how many bulk bags you require. Typically, one George Davies’ bulk bag or bark mulch covers:

  • 10–12m² at 50mm depth
  • 6–8m² at 75mm depth

How deep should bark mulch be laid?

How deep your bark mulch needs to be depends on its purpose. For example, decorative use of bark mulch for flowerbeds or pathways, a depth of 50-75mm should be plenty. If you’re using bark mulch to suppress weeds, a thicker layer of 100mm would be better.

How do you look after bark mulch?

Once laid, bark mulch needs very little attention. We recommend checking it while going about other gardening tasks to remove any weeds (if there are any) and level out any disturbed areas.

How long does bark mulch last?

Typically, bark mulch will stay in place for 12-24 months. At this point, it will have naturally decomposed, and new bark will need to be added.

Do I need to be home for my delivery or bark mulch?

Nope! If you have somewhere specific you’d like us to leave your order, let us know in your order notes. You can even leave out a tarpaulin, wheelbarrow, or bin, etc, with a note saying ‘Please leave here.’

HOW TO INSTALL BALK MULCH

The good news is that adding bark mulch to your garden or landscaping is very straightforward. With proper ground preparation, it’s sure to deliver fantastic results for years to come.

Tools You Need

  • Bark Mulch
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Trowel
  • Shovel
  • Rake
  • Protective clothing

Follow these 3 easy steps to lay your bark mulch like a pro:

  1. Clear the area of weeds, debris, and old bark mulch. For the best results, consider laying a weed membrane beneath the bark mulch.
  2. Rake over the soil in the area you’re covering to create an even surface. This will help ensure a flat, even coverage.
  3. For small areas, use your hands to add piles of bark mulch and spread them evenly. For large areas, use a shovel to pile bark across the area, then use a rake to spread it evenly.
