Bark mulch is a natural by-product of timber. Made from natural tree bark, such as pine, it is screened to an average chip size of 8-35mm. This provides uniform coverage for design features such as walkways or seating areas while suppressing weeds. It also offers additional benefits for improving soil health, structure, and moisture retention.
Measure the area(s) where you’re installing bark mulch. Input these measurements into our handy bark mulch calculator to determine how many bulk bags you require. Typically, one George Davies’ bulk bag or bark mulch covers:
How deep your bark mulch needs to be depends on its purpose. For example, decorative use of bark mulch for flowerbeds or pathways, a depth of 50-75mm should be plenty. If you’re using bark mulch to suppress weeds, a thicker layer of 100mm would be better.
Once laid, bark mulch needs very little attention. We recommend checking it while going about other gardening tasks to remove any weeds (if there are any) and level out any disturbed areas.
Typically, bark mulch will stay in place for 12-24 months. At this point, it will have naturally decomposed, and new bark will need to be added.
Nope! If you have somewhere specific you’d like us to leave your order, let us know in your order notes. You can even leave out a tarpaulin, wheelbarrow, or bin, etc, with a note saying ‘Please leave here.’
The good news is that adding bark mulch to your garden or landscaping is very straightforward. With proper ground preparation, it’s sure to deliver fantastic results for years to come.

GDT’s bark mulch has been cleaned and treated to ensure safety and longevity for our customers and is FSC-certified. We screen the mulch so it’s between 30–40mm long, and only 20% is made up of white wood. This offers very little dust and fines, giving it a soft texture and making it easy to walk on.
Bark mulch is more than just a practical garden product. More often than not, it is a key feature in modern garden design to create distinct zones, enhance the aesthetics of your space, and achieve a cost-effective garden transformation.
These days, outdoor spaces often incorporate more than just a lawn. Whether you’re looking to create a recreation area for a local community, aiming to make your garden child-friendly or would like to incorporate paths into large spaces, bark mulch is a terrific option.
