The Requirements

This project, based in Ashby Parva, involved a full garden renovation of a large, multi-level space within a conservation area. The property itself dates back to the 1600s, meaning the design needed to respect the historical character while introducing a fresh, contemporary feel.

The brief was to create a calm, relaxing environment for everyday enjoyment, alongside a large open-plan space suitable for socialising and entertaining. A careful balance of traditional and modern materials was essential to ensure the finished garden complemented both the architecture and its surroundings.

Challenges and solutions

From the outset, the scale of the project presented several challenges. The garden was heavily overgrown, with significant uneven ground levels that required extensive preparation.

One of the main issues on site was severe water build-up due to the absence of a drainage system. This resulted in persistent flooding and muddy conditions, making the space difficult to work with and unsuitable for long-term use.

Additionally, working within a conservation area required careful consideration to ensure all design elements remained sympathetic to the property’s heritage and surroundings.

To address the water issues, a water table system was installed to effectively manage and redirect the flow of water across the site. This eliminated pooling and created a stable foundation for the rest of the build.

The uneven ground was corrected through precise levelling and alignment, a process that required careful planning and attention to detail to ensure consistency across the different levels of the garden.

Turf selection also played a key role in achieving the brief.

• Wild Meadow Turf was used to introduce a natural, biodiverse element, encouraging wildlife such as bees and butterflies.
• Clover Turf helped soften the harder landscaping areas, particularly around the limestone features.
• Trident Turf created a high-quality main lawn, ideal for a traditional striped finish and day-to-day use.

Together, these elements created a balanced and practical outdoor space with a variety of textures and uses.

The Outcomes and Results

The finished garden is a carefully considered space that seamlessly blends heritage and contemporary design. As you enter, a trio of limestone planters creates an immediate focal point, filled with herbs, hydrangeas, and olive trees.

The lower level features a seating area with limestone paving laid in a clean grid pattern, complemented by Cotswold chippings. Moving upwards, the original brickwork has been restored with lime mortar detailing, preserving the character of the space.

Three sweeping bullnose steps lead to a sheltered garden kitchen, built around mature trees and constructed from hardwood for longevity. This area features a sleek concrete worktop and platform designed to support a multi-fuel Gozney pizza oven.

The upper garden is framed with limestone slabs and Clover Turf, while a soft curve of Wild Meadow Turf transitions naturally into the Trident lawn. The result is an open, airy space filled with light and texture, creating a peaceful yet functional environment that feels like a true retreat.
