A Natural Stone That Softens Any Garden

The tumbling process gives each slab a gently rounded edge and a lightly textured surface, so your patio feels settled and established from the day it is laid rather than sharp and new. It is a natural complement to our wider paving range if you are mixing stone types across a larger project.

Durable and Easy to Live With

At 25mm thick, these slabs are built to withstand everyday foot traffic, garden furniture and the British weather. Being a genuine natural stone, each slab has its own subtle variation in tone and texture, so no two patios ever look quite the same.

GREY TUMBLED LIMESTONE SLABS – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do you lay limestone paving?

Limestone paving is laid on a solid, compacted sub-base with a mortar bed beneath each slab. Full step by step guidance is in our Installation tab above, and our how to lay paving guide covers the process in more detail.

Do you need to seal limestone paving?

Sealing is not essential, but it is recommended. A good quality sealant helps protect the stone from staining, makes it easier to clean, and can enhance the natural colour of the tumbled finish.

How do you clean limestone paving?

Regular sweeping and an occasional wash with a mild detergent and warm water will keep limestone paving looking its best. For more stubborn dirt or algae, a pressure washer on a gentle setting can be used, though always test an inconspicuous area first if the paving has been sealed.

Does limestone paving stain?

Limestone is naturally porous, so it can be prone to staining from spills such as oil or wine if left untreated. Sealing the paving after installation significantly reduces this risk and makes any marks much easier to lift.

What is the difference between tumbled and riven limestone?

Riven limestone has a naturally split, textured surface straight from the quarry, while tumbled limestone goes through an additional process that rounds the edges and softens the face of each slab for a more weathered, aged appearance.

How much do I need to order?

Grey Tumbled Limestone Slabs are priced and ordered by the square metre. Measure the area of your patio or path and order to match; your order is then supplied as patio packs, each covering 1.17m². Our calculators can help you work out exactly how much you need.

HOW TO LAY GREY TUMBLED LIMESTONE SLABS

Tools required:

  • Rubber mallet
  • Spirit level
  • Notched trowel
  • Tape measure and string line
  • Cement mixer or mixing tray
  • Jointing compound

Follow these five steps to lay your Grey Tumbled Limestone Slabs:

Step 1:

Excavate the area to the correct depth and lay a compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1, at least 100mm deep for a patio.

Step 2:

Mix a full mortar bed and lay it evenly across the area you are about to slab, working in small sections at a time so the mortar does not dry out before you lay each slab.

Step 3:

Place each slab onto the mortar bed and tap down gently with a rubber mallet, checking constantly with a spirit level to keep the surface even and correctly sloped for drainage.

Step 4:

Leave consistent joint gaps between each slab, typically 10 to 15mm, using spacers or a string line to keep them straight.

Step 5:

Once the mortar has cured, fill the joints with your chosen jointing compound and leave the patio undisturbed while it fully sets.
