Behind the Scenes at Hertfordshire Zoo with George Davies Turf & Stone

About Hertfordshire Zoo

Hertfordshire Zoo, formerly known as Paradise Wildlife Park, is one of the UK’s leading family attractions with a strong conservation focus. Based in Broxbourne, the zoo is home to more than 800 animals and continues to invest in habitat improvements and educational facilities.

In recent years, the site has undergone significant redevelopment. The focus has shifted toward immersive, welfare-led environments that support breeding programmes and long-term conservation work. Each new habitat is designed to balance animal wellbeing with visitor experience.

The zoo also plays an important role in education. From discovery studios to behind-the-scenes experiences, it creates opportunities for visitors to understand wildlife protection and global conservation challenges.

The VISIT

When members of the George Davies Turf & Stone team visited the zoo, it gave real context to the materials we had donated. Darren, Damian and Izzy were invited behind the scenes to see how the new spaces were being used day to day.

The team were shown around key habitat areas, including the Lions of India enclosure and the alpaca paddocks where our Trident Turf had been installed. Seeing the turf in use, holding up well under animal activity, was a proud moment. It reinforced why product choice matters in specialist environments.

One of the highlights was spotting a plaque in the new VIP area recognising our contribution. It was a small reminder that local businesses can make a meaningful difference when they support projects like this.

The outcomes and results

We donated Trident Turf, along with sleepers, black limestone paving, topsoil and patio materials to support both animal habitats and the new VIP area. These materials helped shape durable, natural spaces built to handle heavy use.

The turf now forms part of active enclosures, providing a comfortable surface for animals while maintaining a clean and professional appearance for visitors. The sleepers and paving created structure and definition within the VIP area, supporting an improved guest experience.

Overall, the project strengthened our relationship with the zoo and demonstrated how landscaping materials can play a practical role in conservation-led development. It showed that even the ground beneath your feet can contribute to animal welfare and education when chosen carefully.
