Moyers Wins Walter Hayes Trophy….Again!!

December 18, 2018

Back in November reigning Walter Hayes Trophy Champion, Michael Moyers, successfully retained the title, becoming one of only 3 people to have ever won the event more than once since it began in 2004.  Once again over 100 drivers from around the globe entered this prestigious event.

After a brilliant few days testing in both dry and wet conditions, the heat draws were made and Moyers would line up in Heat 4.  Qualifying went to plan, even though Moyers wasn’t 100% happy with the balance he still secured pole position and converted this into a heat win, taking advantage of a great dice between Gough and McCullough in 2nd and 3rd place.  This meant automatic qualification into the semi-finals and guaranteed a front row start.

The Semi Final proved to be a very stressful race for Moyers! Having made a good start and building a healthy 3.5 second lead, a big accident at the exit on turn one resulted in the red flag being shown, and the advantage being bought back down to zero!  Moyers kept his cool though, even with his engine water temperature rising and setting off the alarm on the steering wheel!  Moyers then made a good restart and bought the car home to P1 in the shortened 4 lap sprint race.

The Grand Final… Moyers secured a front row start in P2, alongside his team mate, Julian Van Der Watt from South Africa.  The red lights went out and the race began, with a good start by the front two rows.  Moyers took the lead briefly before a huge moment at Copse meant falling back to 3rd into Becketts.  He soon recovered though, drafting down the long Wellington straight and back into the lead into Brooklands.  Moyers was once again in control, holding a 1 second gap to the chasing cars behind, before two further accidents around the circuit resulted in the safety car being deployed.  Moyers made a textbook restart but then disaster struck into Brooklands, braking too late and running wide onto the run-off area allowing 3 time Champion, Joey Foster, to take the lead.  With only a few laps remaining and the car having the pace to win, Moyers made a fantastic move on Joey Foster into Brooklands to take the lead, then building another 1 second lead and managing to stay mistake free for the remaining few laps to take back-to-back Walter Hayes Trophy wins!!

A very emotional Moyers said, “This is such a proud moment for myself and all my family, sponsors and supporters.  We’ve worked so hard to get here and I’m ecstatic, I was screaming and crying all the way round my in-lap, and to have many of my sponsors here watching in the Brooklands hospitality suite made it even sweeter!  I will be back next year to attempt the “hat trick”!

“A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported me the past few seasons, we’ve experienced the highs and the lows of the sport along the journey and I couldn’t have done it without you all.  The Kevin Mills Racing team always give me the best opportunity to win and a special thanks to my mechanic, Ali, who makes sure the car stays reliable and fast every time! I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far and look forward to making more amazing memoires in the future”
